The Marathon Lottery

A few things I noticed about the NYC Marathon Lottery today:

Crowd:

The crowd seemed to have no energy. I was so excited when the clock struck 12 noon and the show began. They opened to shots of people just standing around looking hot and board. Perhaps we could get the crowd rallied a bit. We could maybe host the event a little later in the day, say 4pm. Spectators might have a little higher energy level in cooler temperatures. Instead of allowing just the ticket holders in the corral, let their families and friends in as well. I know I can more easily cut loose and relax when I am with people I know. I was searching the SXSW pages, lamenting the fact that I will not be there, searching for new sites and ideas. I discovered the site Snap Goods. I was intrigued, so I checked them out and was pleased by the experience their page provided.

Triathlon Week Twitter Awards

Triathlon Week magazine recently announced the “The Triathlon Twitter Awards.” Six categories ranging from ‘Best Triathlon Coach” to “Best Triathlon Product” will be nominated through Twitter. The top five nominations in each category will then be listed on the Triathlon Week site and voted upon by readers. Serving as a great example of the growing influence of social media marketing in sport, this contest demonstrates the need for race organizers, athletes, and product brands to connect to their consumers both on and off the course.

The role of social media in sport is growing and evolving. Sure, it is great to have a wetsuit that works well, but with so many brands to choose from why not pick one that offers a little more? Xterra Wetsuits (@XTERRAWETSUITS), of San Diego, CA, provides followers with motivation, product insight, and access to elite athlete interviews. They are doing a great job of providing us with a well rounded experience surrounding their product.

These awards are another step in an exciting direction for us.

Personality Curation?

I am always searching for new social platforms that tend to make life a little more fun or interesting. It seems like the number of “check in” options lately has swollen beyond a rate at which I can keep up. After trying numerous new twists, I still find myself using FourSquare, the one I started with.
So, as you can imagine, I’m a little skeptical about new platforms, though I do love to try them out. Recently, I discovered a site called “Fancy.” They claim to be nothing more than a place to store a collection of the things you love. I inserted a button onto my browser and installed an app on my phone. So far, I really like the site. It is crisp and clean in appearance, free from the clutter sites like this often have.

More importantly, I am excited about the new opportunity to use clippings and pictures to build a representation of who I am and what I love. Fancy might just be an exploration of identity, digital style.

Utilizing QR Codes?

I am often finding myself amazed by the latest technology and eager to learn more about how to utilize it in order to better bridge the gap between information and experience.

Lately, I have been experimenting with QR codes and have been amazed by the potential uses for marketers. When scanned, these codes can redirect the user to a website, video, simple text, or a map with directions.

I generated a few QR codes of mobile sites I often visit and posted them in my home. I give the codes a quick scan to check the weather or find a movie playing nearby. The codes have worked for me every time and I find them to be a bit more user – friendly than some apps.

So this got me thinking, for what else could I use the codes? I created a video which contained a QR code and uploaded it to YouTube. The code was scannable and successfully redirected me to my mobile blog. Next, I posted the video to twitter to see if others would try it out. Sure enough, I had some hits.

For me, one of the coolest features of the QR code technology is that the redirect can change as often as you like. I can print one code and change the content daily, without having to reprint or redesign anything.

What are some of the creative uses you have developed for QR codes? Do you see this as a viable marketing tool for the years ahead?

Patong, Phuket

I took this photo in February of 2010 while in Phatong, Phuket. It was an amazing place. We stayed in a great little boutique hotel right on the beach. We were near the nightlife center, which was crazy but not too loud. We used “took – tooks” to get to a drag show. We did a little shopping (it was a last minute trip and we didn’t take any bags), spent some time on the peach, and just enjoyed the culture walking around town.
